"A big thank you from us. That was utterly brilliant. We are both inspired to get Sophia started on learning sounds and now feel armed with so many wonderful ideas.
Iona has such amazing energy and enthusiasm – it is hard not to buy into it all!"
Why are phonics important?
Phonics is the recommended way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.
Written language can be compared to a code, so knowing the sounds of individual letters and how those letters sound when they’re combined will help children decode words as they read. It will also allow children to know which letters to use when they write.
Who is the workshop leader?
Iona is a qualified and experienced teacher, who has taught in Kensington and Chelsea for over 15 years and co-ordinated the school’s phonics teaching for 11 years. During this time the school became one of the 250 top performing schools in the country in terms of the progress which the pupils made. Iona has run one-to-one sessions to over 1,000 parents and carers. She is also the mother of three young boys at primary school.
